Newington Invests in Charity Bank

A leading Northern Ireland credit union has become a social investor in the UK’s only bank that is also a charity*.

By opening a deposit account with Charity Bank, its reserves will earn a fair interest rate, while being recycled in the local community through loans to voluntary and community organisations, charities and social enterprises.

Like many credit unions in Northern Ireland, Newington has built up substantial credit balances from its many savers.  Under current credit union legislation, it is unable to lend directly to voluntary and community organisations itself.  Charity Bank specialises in lending to these organisations and is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

In return for the investment, invested over five years, Charity Bank has pledged to make every effort to lend the money out again to organisations in Newington’s ‘common bond’ catchment area in North Belfast.  The Bank will be briefing Newington’s staff, placing leaflets in the credit union and marketing its lending services directly to local charities and community organisations.

Newington’s Chief Executive, Rosaleen Bradley, says: “Like the Credit Union movement, Charity Bank is ‘not for profit, not for gain’.  We are delighted to have found a way to use our members’ savings for the benefit of the local community, while receiving a fair return for our investment.”

Adds Charity Bank’s Regional Manager, Niamh Goggin:  “The credit union movement, in both Northern Ireland and the Republic, has developed into a world-class social finance sector.

“Social banks, such as Charity Bank, are still in their early days in the UK and Ireland and we welcome the opportunity to work co-operatively with successful credit unions like Newington.  Together, we can deliver a fair financial return and a real social impact through investing in local charities and community organisations.”

Increase in Juvenile Deposits

From 1 April 2006 the amount a juvenile can save was increased to £10000.

Further to the legislative review we are pleased to advise that the maximum which a credit union can hold on deposit from persons too young to be a member (i.e. someone under the age of 16) has increased from £1000 to £10000. Share withdrawals for amounts over £1000 must be in writing from the parent/guardian for the attention of the Board of Directors. For more information contact Rosaleen 90351040.

Foreign Exchange

Foreign Currency  and Travellers Cheques now available in Newington Credit Union

Newington Credit Union now offers a Foreign Exchange service for members.

Excellent Rates - No commission charged.

The Foreign Exchange Office operates from 10am to 5pm Mon to Friday and from 9.30am to 12pm on Saturdays.

Please give two days notice before currency is required for places other than Europe or USA.

Death Benefit Insurance

Death Benfit Insurance increased from £1000 to £2000 for all eligible members.

The Board of Directors are continually exploring ways to improve the services offered to the member. This year a decision was made to increase the Death Benefit Insurance to £2000 for all members that join the Credit union before the age of 70. The credit union pays this insurance as an operational expense, therefore there is no direct cost to the member. We would ask that members save regularly as we want to include all members in this very beneficial service.
